Tigranakert used to be one of the capitals of ancient Armenia. It is one of the 4 Tigranakert cities founded by the king Tigran the Great. The name itself means “Built by Tigran”. Acropolis enclosure, mausoleums, market streets, part of Basilica church of early Christianity times has been recently found here during the excavations made in 2005. The found city dates back to 1st century BC and the discovery has been reported as astonishing. However, the excavation works have been stopped, hopefully temporarily.
