Akhtala monastery was built in 13th c. and is unique for having well preserved fresco paintings on inside walls.The village, where the monastery is located, is situated on the left bank of river Debed. There are numerous archaeological sights surrounding the village. In 1888 famous archaeologist J. Morgan discovered a tomb dating back to 8-7th century BC. The village has played an important role during the reign of Armenian Kyurikyan dynasty, when, in 10th century, the castle was built.Inside the fortress the Akhtala monastery complex is located. The main church – St Astvadzatsin (St. Mary), was built atthe beginning 13th century by the Supreme Commander of the Armenian-Georgian state Ivaneh Zakarian. The monastery is famous for its well preserved frescos, where one can see different episodes of the Old and New Testament. One can differentiate the frescos of the complex by their style – those coming from a later era, around 13th century, are inspired by Byzantine style, the older ones, coming from 11th century are more similar to Mughni gospel miniature paintings. There are numerous churches in the area dating back to 13th century, such as St Trinity, St George and the Twin-churches.
